Renew is a verb, and it promises something narrower than new. Nothing leaves this counter new. A heel goes back to the height it was cut at. A worn sole is replaced with one that grips again. A zipper that stopped closing is swapped for one that closes. The pair goes home changed in the way it behaves, which is usually the thing the owner missed.

That word decides how the conversation starts here. Before any work is quoted, we say what the repair will change and what it will leave exactly as it is. Creasing across the vamp stays. Then there is the zipper, which brings in more otherwise-sound boots than any other single part. A zipper fails at the tape and the stitching that holds it in, not usually at the teeth, and a boot whose zipper tape was stitched in can be rebuilt while a boot whose tape was only bonded is a much harder case. None of that is visible in a photograph. We see it from our side of the counter, over and over.
